The Smith-Bodgers holiday diary

The holiday adventures of our crazy family

Questionable parenting

We continued the relaxed end to our trip with a laid back morning in the pool and picnic lunch on the porch at the hotel. We then decided, for reasons still not entirely clear to me, to embark on a a nature walk in the ninety degree heat with Addison once again on my back.  (Added by wifey –  Gavin wanted to go and take pictures on his own and I thought it would be nice if we all came along, sorry Gav).

We walked from the hotel to the creek back up towards the main road spotting Macaws, huge lizards and numerous birds much to Bayley’s delight. We were then told by some passing Americans staying in our hotel that they had spotted an eight foot crocodile in the small creek ahead! What did we do? Of course as responsible parents with a one year old in a backpack and a tired four year old walking we headed for the creek with gusto to try and find the beast. After 20 minutes of peering, staring and a little stone throwing from an over Zealous B we admitted defeat as the only sighting was of the Crocs eyes slowly moving under the bridge we were stood on.

After we had considered the potential implications of our actions we set of to a neighbouring hotel for a smoothie and to see what double the money buys you – a lot it would seem.

We finished off the day with the Cooke family, a home coked meal and lots of fun had by all. The holiday keeps getting better

Relaxing day at the pool

Not much to report today, we spent the day at the pool, Bayley loved her new snorkel and Addi mastered his arm bands. Bayley also befriended an American couple who now have a shadow at every meal time!

Ivan, Angelina and the kids joined us at the pool late afternoon and everyone had a blast in the pool.

Off into Jaco for a look around and maybe a play in the sea tomorrow

Only 4 pics today, link below

The reunion

A lazy morning spent at the pool, in between numerous ‘discussions’ with delusional Dave the hotel…. manager? We now have a new room and hot water so all is good again and I can wash the kids with less fuss.

The cousins were like long lost soul mates desperate to get back together which meant a relaxing afternoon at the Cooke household playing and generally hanging out.

Despite their best hunting efforts in the wild wild garden, Gavin and Ivan did not succeed to find Armadillo’s so they opted to crocodile watch (the local resident croc)  instead with more success!

Not many pics but they’re on the link below

Nothing to see here

Our last day of the tour was significantly less eventful than the previous five as we had to travel 4.5 hrs back to our beach location for the last week. The kids were now ‘jungled out’ so we opted for a short volcano visit to break up our journey back.

The drive to the volcano saw us encounter the first traffic queue of the holiday caused by roadworks to rebuild our mountain road which was damaged in an earthquake two days ago. This also answered why I thought the traffic noise passing the hotel at 5 am had been louder than to be expected!

We had been warned by Luis yesterday that if the clouds closed in we wouldn’t see much, guess what happened. We caught glimpses of the crater whenever the clouds cleared but didn’t see the geyser of blue lagoon located in the centre of the crater whitch was a shame.

We stopped at another roadside restaurant for more typical Tico cuisine of chicken & rice, fried fish and seafood soup. We said our goodbyes to Luis at the Monterey del Mar, our home for the next week, and headed for the pool.

I’ll not bore you with the details of our experiences at this hotel and the manger, Dave, but think Fawlty Towers meets ‘The Hotel’ (the programme based on a Torquay hotel on C4 last year) and you get the idea.

No plans other than spending time at pool, on beach and with family for next week. Can’t wait.

A few pics only today

A wildlife bonanza

We woke early today and were first in the restaurant for breakfast, thankfully as Addison once again decided to have breakfast quite literally ‘on the go’ making laps of the restaurant holding his toast. We then set off on the short journey to our boat tour. Luckily for us Lois knew a local boat owner who agreed to give us a private trip which was a blessing as Addison continued to stamp his own loud and active signature on the morning. The trip was incredible, simply breathtaking, for those who have seen Apocalypse Now think about journeying deeper into the jungle in search of Kurtz and you’re not far off.

Despite the stifling heat at the hotel the river provided a welcome breeze and areas of shade. We saw numerous iguanas, birds and large fish in the clear water before spotting a Cayman sunning himself on the bank in the distance. With some skillful skippering we managed to get within a few metres of him for some great pics. We then followed the distinctive sounds of the howler monkeys, which Bayley has now mastered, to track a family down high in the tree tops. Despite the river being the driest in memory acording to locals we spotted,my other creatures (see link to pics at end of post) before heading back.

We then headed back to the hotel for a picnic lunch picked up from the local bakery on the veranda to shelter from the midday heat. The food here is tasty but quite simple, so it is easy to find something for all appetites.

By 2:30 we were ready for our last, and what turned out to be most challenging trek. Our location was Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve and Addison was packed into the backpack, long trousers, long sleeves and closed toe shoes were donned and off we went. Immediately the difference in trail was apparent as we were now much lower than previous treks in a traditional rainforest. The trees were really dense and the trail rustic at best. We had a good idea of what was in store when Luis stopped us for a briefing with strict instructions of ‘touch nothing, don’t step off the trail and keep Bayley close’ needless to say we heeded his advice. A few minutes later we were warned of a venomous snake sighting just off the trail up ahead which made Luis extra vigalent. As we rounded a bend in the trail he called us all past him then pointed to what looked like a pile of leaves at the base of the tree we has just passed, it was in fact the highly venomous pit nosed viper, three feet away from us! Mandy was of course hugely curious and leant in for a closer look, I however opted for the zoom lens of the camera.

After this excitement we continued on the trail at which point I noticed everyone else seemed to be wearing knee high wellie boots to protect them from snake bites, I asked about this to be told that they were tourists who turned up in flip flop and were given the boots for their own safety. We then went on to see all three varieties of Toucan, a three-toed sloth to finish our sloth family, numerous orchids and some huge iguanas. As we headed back to the car we found a sleeping sloth high up in the trees asleep facing us, the pics of him are very funny.

We stopped at a local roadside diner for tea allowing the kids to refuel before returning to the hotel after dark. Mandy opted for a chicken, advacao and rice dish,  the kids shared some breaded fish, which has become a firm favourite and I tucked into Fried Chicken.

The last bit of nature stalking for the day was to try and find the ref eyed tree frog I had located in a pond that morning for a night time shot of his red eyes. After some excitement involving Bayley falling into the foliage and Addison chasing a lizard we located a couple of frogs and I captured the pic above.

Tomorrow is the end of the road trip and back to the beach, we will stop by a live volcanoe on the way to break up the trip so fingers crossed for good visibility at 2,700m

All the pics from today are on the link below, I hope you’re not all bored yet I suspect the updates will slow down once we return to the beach for some well earned relaxation time…..however we are on holiday with Mandy so perhaps not 🙂

A day of two halves

We opted for a slower paced start to today as the heat was beginning to sap our energy after the exploits of the last few days, and the hotel spa needed our attention before we checked out!

We were then set to go, car packed and we headed to EcoCentro Danaus. A nature walk area which was lovely. After being greated by a two towed sloth and her baby we enjoyed the trail. Our first sighting was of Caymon and some babies, lounging around on a log. Bayley loved the butterfly house and the Basilisk Lizards with their funny back leg run, they were like something from a Pixar movie.

We enjoyed lunch and ice cream in the touristy town of Fotuna and then set of for a couple of hours drive to Sarapiqui to experience a lowland rainforest. We are staying at La Quinta County Inn, very tie-dye and yoga type retreat. But run locally so has a rustic, warm Costa Rican charm.

It is HOT here, highs of 30 degrees.  We swam in the pool to cool off before a BBQ meal with two very over tired, hyperactive kids.   We have a hammock on our porch which is causing endless arguments with B &  A! The hotel is close to a Pineapple plantation so combined with the lower altitude and heat, Mosuitotos are everywhere. Gavin is suffering despite almost bathing in deet, he must be tasty 😉

Private river cruise early tomorrow morning and time to experience how a low land rainforest differs to the cloud forest.

Volcanoes and Waterfalls

Today was another transfer day, we left the familiar surroundings of Montverde to head for Arenal volcano.

We took an early taxi of about 1 hour 40 mins, to join a river crossing to get to Arenal, home of Costa Rica’s landmark active Volcano (Lava not currently flowing!). Louis took our bags on the four hour road trip to meet us at the other side, so it was time for us to sit back, relax and enjoy the views. The landscape was stunning, different again with rolling green hills and mountains. Less forest and more of a farming landscape of both cattle and crops, passing through many small villages.

The boat crossing made a nice change to the bumpy roads and soon we were across and taking a coach, to what turned out to be a rather smart hotel, Arenal Springs. With great views of the Volcano and it’s own natural springs to swim in , maintaining a constant natural temperature of 37 degrees – happy days for me.

After a lunch on our porch using up the fruit and crackers from various stops along the way, we then went in search of a much cooler swim in La Catarata de la Fortuna (waterfall).  It was a steep hike down to the waterfall, thankfully with steps in place! Gavin took on some more endurance training carring the Boy on his back and I held a very sweaty small hand that wobbled and stumble tripped her way down. It was well worth it, a spectacular fall with a natural, but COLD natural pool. We all braved the chill and enjoyed swimming amongst the fish in crystal clear water.

The less said about the climb back up the better! Gav gritted his teeth and powered through, Bayley was bribed with ice cream and marbles.

With a wornout team Smith, we opted for a trip to the store to create a picnic super. The kids were asleep by 7.15, which meant Gavin could enjoy a well earned cigar as a rare treat.

A short stay in Arenal. We leave tomorrow but not before we play in the hotel spa pools and visit a natural trail in search of Cayman

Pics from today here (hopefully, internet a bit rubbish today)

Snakes, Sloths and Sugar Cane

After our first hot shower since the airport hotel and a delicious breakfast, during which we saw our first Toucan, we were all set for our first big hike. Before we set off we asked Luis to give us a guided tour around the grounds of our hotel which used to be a Quaker dairy farm. The walk kicked off with Addison tripping and rolling at speed down a rocky hill with Mummy in hot pursuit (heart in mouth moment), thankfully he avoided all of the big rocks and was quickly back to his noisy self. A few minutes later whilst Addison was shouting at a statue of a crocodile I was summoned by Bayley as Mummy had found a snake which I saw briefly as it disappeared into the bushes where Bayley, Mandy and Luis continued to search for it for a few more minutes, only after giving up the search did Luis tell us he ‘thought’ it ‘probably’ wasn’t the highly venomous Coral Snake!

With this excitement under our belt and another of the animals B ‘had’ to see crossed off the list we headed for the van and the damned bumpy road again.

This time we were headed to the Cloud Forest; Mount Verde. A reasonably steady climb with a Rocky path to follow, but tough for gavin carrying Addison for the 3 hour trip. Simply incredible. Gavin described it as being in a David Attenborough film! It was so dense, full of intriguing sounds and shadows. Bayley loved the swinging tree top bridges and my holiday was complete as we had the most wonderful, up close and personal sighting of a two toed sloth with her Baby. I could have watched her all day (whilst she did nothing but sleep of course!).

We added more to Bayley’s list with another Snake….poisonous this time and some playful Howler Monkeys.

In the afternoon we visited a farm to experience how Coffee, Sugar and Cocca is grown and produced. We took a ride in a cart pulled by cows and Bayley and Gavin made their own Candy.

On our way home, we tried to keep the kids interest by having dinner in a real tree house restaurant. Great experience but the day was too much for Addison, so it was short and sweet in order to get him back to bed.

Our last night in the beautiful Fonda Verda, time to pack up and get ready for an early tour to take us on a river Cossing to the Arenal Volcano.

Monkey business

Our tour has begun!

We were picked up this morning by our guide, Louis, to start our 6 day tour of the rain forests and volcanoes. Our first stop was Carara National Park for a short nature walk to break up our 4hr journey to the cloud forest. We set off and quickly discovered there is little that Louis doesn’t know about anything in the natural world or Costa Rican history, within 10 minutes  we’d learnt so much it was incredible.

Bayley was fascinated by the leaf cutter ants and determined to find a monkey, a task she gave Louis within minutes of leaving the van. Remarkably it was Daddy who first spotted the white faced (capuchin) monkey asleep on a branch, although Addison’s dulcet tones soon roused him into activity. We followed the monkey through binoculars and saw him rejoin others in the distance. We then learnt more about the Costa Rican Eco system and the role of termites, dead trees and saw some more Macaws, what a first morning

It was then time to hit the road and find some lunch, first we stopped for some fruit from a roadside shack where Addison made friends with the vendor and ate his fair share of free samples. Lunch was at a Costa Rican version of a service station, much cleaner and better food than we are used to at home. Topped off for Bayley and Addison with an ice cream palour to visit for dessert.

Then we had the long slog to Monteverde, 1800 metres above sea level. We were warned that the last 90 mins would be on a bumpy road but didn’t quite understand what ‘bumpy’ meant.  With the constant ask “are we on the bumpy road yet?”, soon to be self addressed when Bayley was nearly thrown out of her seat….”so this is the bumpy road?!”

As we drove into the mountains the views of the Ocean (Golfo de Nicoya) and the Peninsula were breath taking. The journey was tiresome with such rough terraine, but the kids managed to sleep as we held their heads back into their seats.

Relieved to arrive at Montervede and our beautiful hotel, Addison ran around in circles on the shiney wooden floor and now has a purple egg headed bruise as a consequence. So we headed to the pool to cool off, dived in to the serene, elevated pool amongst the trees….not heated, freezing cold and took more than our breath away!

In case we hadn’t done enough already, it was a quick turn around to get back on the road to visit the Rainarium (Frog Pond) for a torch light walk to see the nocturnal frogs and toads.  This was a huge hit with Bayley, she was fascinated by the whole experience. Addison on the other hand wanted to run off in the dark, scream loudly and  generally make a nuisance of himself amongst the other tourists.

We headed to a local Tico (Coster Rican) eatery for dinner. Rice,  Fish,  Chicken etc. a big hit with us all and as we prepared to  leave Addison was taken to the kitchen by the staff to meet the female members of the team who just couldn’t get enough of his cheeky ways , curly hair and grimace smile!

A fun but packed day and we crawled into bed (after sitting in the dark with head torches for half an hour waiting for  Addison to finally fall asleep), ready for day two of the tour.

who’s a pretty boy then?

Less to report today as we spent all day in and around the hotel. The weather continues to be scorching with temps well into the 90’s which Bayley made the most of spending over four hours in the pool perfecting her underwater forward roll.

When the kids went for a lunchtime break from the sun I took the opportunity to hunt down some scarlet macaws we had seen flying overhead earlier. After some Bear Grylls style stalking I located them only to find that they are incredibly difficult to photograph. I did get a few half decent shots like the one above eventually

We made contact with our guide for the tour who assured us his van was plenty big enough for all of our bags so we left just a few with Ivan before an early dinner and bed ready for the big day tomorrow
